Frequently Asked Questions

• Is it a kind of therapy?

– No, it's an educational technique with certain therapeutic effects. The Alexander T
echnique is not a substitute for a medical treatment for a specific condition. It favourises an overall improvement in how we use ourselves which can in turn indirectly alleviate specific troubles (i.e. back pain etc.)

  • Can I learn to sit up straight with this technique?

– The AT does not dictate what it supposes to be "correct posture". It encourages a more adequate use of the "self" (mind and body). When we try to sit up straight because we feel we are too concave, we often end up shortening the spine in the opposite direction.

Is it taught in groups like yoga or Pilates ?

– In some cases it can be, for introductory workshops or when it is taught in conjunction with a specific activity. Eg. dance, yoga or vocal skills etc… However, one to one classes are the norm.

• Is it like massage/yoga/Pilates/Osteopathy/Feldenkreis etc… ?

– There is surely some overlap but what distinguishes it is that you can use the principles of the AT easily in everyday life at any time. It is true that all these other activities and therapies can be complementary to the AT.

• How many classes does one need?

– In the beginning, it is advisable to have frequent classes in order to assimilate the principles. 30 sessions are recommended. After that it depends very much on the pupil.

• Will I always need a teacher ?

– Not necessarily. After time, you will be able to practise more and more independently.
