What happens in a lesson ?

The teacher guides the pupil through everyday movements through both verbal instructions and light touch in order to develop mental and physical consciousness before and during each movement.

The first 30 minutes:

The pupil begins to learn the principles of the Alexander Technique through either ordinary, daily actions for example:

  • standing up/sitting down
  • walking
  • kneeling/bending down
  • reading/writing/typing
  • going up and down stairs
  • lifting/carrying objects
  • speaking
  • vision

And/or specific activities that the pupil would like to improve, e.g. :

  • playing a musical instrument
  • giving a presentation/speech
  • singing
  • sports/exercise/dance movements
  • drawing

The last 15 minutes:

Table or floorwork

The pupil lies down while the teacher gently encourages separation and expansion in the joints.

This is not a passive part of the lesson for the pupil. It is not a massage or therapy that one only receives.

The teacher continues to give verbal instructions. The pupil remains awake and alert, carrying on the learning process of discovering the connections between mind and body.

As a consequence :

After a series of lessons, the pupil acquires a better alignment of the spine and balance of tensions in throughout the body.

The pupil experiences a gradually increasing awareness of bad postural habits, making them easier to break.

Movement becomes lighter, and more stable.
